Reid Furniture was one of Scotland’s favourite furniture companies and from its factory in Hillington, Glasgow made high-quality chairs and sofas that sold in big numbers all over Scotland.
Unfortunately, Reid Furniture is no more but many of their suites are still loved and used daily all over the country. Unlike many of the sofas sold today on the High Street that are made in the far East from poor quality materials, Reid sofas were quality items. Solid hardwood frames, high-quality springs and excellent foams meant that they tended to last for many years, rarely giving any trouble at all.
We come across many Reid sofas that were built in the 1970’s that are still in excellent condition. The frames are solid with no creeks or squeaks and the foams are still in good shape. Some of the styles have even come back into fashion!
If you have an old Reid sofa that looks like it’s seen better days you should think about having it recovered rather than throwing it in a skip. We strip it right back to the frame, thoroughly checking it to ensure it’s completely solid and adding strengthening if required. We add new high-quality foams and ensure that underneath it’s in first-class condition before covering it in your choice of fabric or leather.
The cost is roughly the same as buying one of the cheaper sofas on offer from the main High Street retailers. However, we can assure you that the quality of construction and materials will be of a far higher standard. Many ‘affordable’ High Street sofas are made from softwoods, hardboard, ‘bonded’ leather (scraps of leather glued together) and poor-quality foams and fixings which are then packed into containers so tightly you often can never get the packing creases out properly.
Of course, many new sofas available on the High Street are British built and of good quality but often people don’t realise they’ve bought an inferior sofa until they’ve had it for a year or two and it starts to creek when you sit on it, the cushions loose support and comfort and the leather goes really baggy and stretched.
If you have a quality sofa we reckon recovering it is a great idea. You can go from fabric to leather or from leather to fabric. The choice is yours (and you really do have a choice, we have literally thousands of stunning fabrics and leathers available).
