Change a Bonded Leather Sofa to a Fabric Sofa

What is Bonded Leather?

Many of the ‘affordable’ leather sofas in High Street furniture stores are not quite what they appear to be. When a real leather sofa is made, the upholsterer takes the cow hide and cuts it into the required shape. As you can imagine there are lots of off-cuts and small pieces of waste leather. All of this is gathered up and ground together by machine into a form of slimy, leathery mulch. This is then glued together with a special polyurethane glue and flattened out into a long sheet. When dry we have ‘bonded leather’.

bonded-leather-sofaBonded leather only needs to have 20% leather content but often has a lot more and it can look quite convincing, even smelling quite authentic when new. It can look great too, especially when brand new. The problem usually arises a couple years down the line when cracks start to appear and the plastic coating starts to flake off. Then it can look awful.

The shop you bought it from will say it’s fair wear and tear so you have no comeback. The only crumb of comfort may be that the sofa might not have been hugely expensive in the first place but as this can happen after a very short time it’s a real waste of money.

If you look at the red sofa on this page you’ll see that it was almost in new condition. The arms showed hardly any signs of use at all, the frame was still strong and the cushions were hardly worn. We recovered it in fabric for the customer but it was a real waste for that to happen so soon.

We would suggest when buying new that if you can’t stretch your budget to real leather try picking a fabric sofa instead of a bonded leather one. A bonded leather sofa might seem like a great deal at the time but you may well regret it down the road.

Bonded leather to fabric sofa

This old Natuzzi leather sofa was broken and saggy. Not any more!

Rescot can repair ANY sofa regardless of its condition.

You would think that the below Natuzzi leather sofa would be completely beyond repair as the frame looks completely broken and the cushions have been compressed through use resulting in the leather becoming saggy and creased.

Rescot took the whole thing apart and, as it’s a good quality sofa the frame was completely fine. Just in case we added some reinforcement, some new webbing and we tightened everything up to factory specifications, we added new foam and put it all together again.

The sofa now looks to be in great condition and will give great service for years to come.

So even if you think your sofa is well beyond repair you’ll be amazed as what Rescot can do and how much money you could save.

Would you like to recover your Reids suite? We can make your favourite old sofa your favourite new sofa!

Reid Furniture was one of Scotland’s favourite furniture companies and from its factory in Hillington, Glasgow made high quality chairs and sofas that sold in big numbers all over Scotland.

Unfortunately Reid Furniture is no more but many of their suites are still loved and used daily all over the country. Unlike many of the sofas sold today on the High Street that are made in the far East from poor quality materials, Reid sofas were quality items. Solid hardwood frames, high quality springs and excellent foams meant that they tended to last for many years, rarely giving any trouble at all.

We come across many Reid sofas that were built in the 1970’s that are still in excellent condition. The frames are solid with no creeks or squeaks and the foams are still in good shape. Some of the styles have even come back into fashion!

reidsIf you have an old Reid sofa that looks like it’s seen better days  you should think about having it recovered rather than throwing it in a skip. We strip it right back to the frame, thoroughly checking it to ensure it’s completely solid and adding strengthening if required. We add new high quality foams and ensure that underneath it’s in first class condition before covering it in your choice of fabric or leather.

The cost is roughly them same as buying one of the cheaper sofas on offer from the main High Street retailers. However we can assure you that the quality of construction and materials will be of a far higher standard. Many ‘affordable’ High Street sofas are made from softwoods, hardboard, ‘bonded’ leather (scraps of leather glued together) and poor quality foams and fixings which are then packed into containers so tightly you often can never get the packing creases out properly.

Of course many new sofas available on the High Street are British built and of good quality but often people don’t realise they’ve bought an inferior sofa until they’ve had it for a year or two and it starts to creek when you sit on it, the cushions loose support and comfort and the leather goes really baggy and stretched.

If you have a quality sofa we reckon recovering it is a great idea. You can go from fabric to leather or from leather to fabric. The choice is yours (and you really do have a choice, we have literally thousands of stunning fabrics and leathers available).

Recovering a quality Duresta sofa with excellent results

Mrs Yuill from Dunfermline in Fife asked us to give her a quote to recover her old Duresta suite in new, modern fabric.

She also needed an additional chair to match the one she already had. Long out of production, she thought her only option was to buy a new sofa and throw away her favourite old suite.

duresta-reupholsteryA friend recommended Rescot Upholstery and she gave us a call. We showed her a selection of fabrics and told her we would make her an additional matching chair from scratch, made from the same high quality materials to ensure long life.

When we stripped down her sofa it was, as expected, in great condition underneath. Duresta know how to make quality furniture and the frame was in great condition. We added some strengthening just to be sure as well as adding new foams and a couple of new springs. We made an exact copy of the single chair and then made the new covers.

Mrs Yuill absolutely loves it and can believe how well it turned out. She’s delighted at the price too, coming in at under half the cost of a replacement.
